Garden Rooms

A great way to get enjoyment from your garden all year round, whatever the weather, is to add a conservatory or orangery to your home. Not only does this provide a great place to view your garden, but you can make it a haven for plants, bringing your garden indoors.

Orangeries were originally constructed to house fruit trees, and you could still consider growing your own citrus fruits indoors today. You may need to monitor indoor temperatures depending on what you choose to grow, but lemons and kumquats are considered the most resilient. Olive trees are also good to grow in conservatories as they are evergreens that you can prune to your desired size and shape.

When it comes to flowers in your conservatory, Peace Lilies are a great choice as they are known for cleaning the air, whilst being easy to look after. Indoor Azaleas are also a good idea, adding splashes of colour including pinks, reds and purples. Whatever you choose to grow in your conservatory or orangery, we're sure you'll be able to create a very personal garden room to enjoy.

Let In The New Year!

We’re about to embark on another new year – here’s hoping you all have a great 2022! But how many of you will be including age-old traditions in your New Year celebrations?

It is said that you should wear new clothes on New Year’s Eve, not just to look glam for any parties you may attend, but to ensure you’ll look and feel good during the coming year. Noisy celebrations including fireworks are said to ward off evil, and let’s face it, are great fun too!

First footing is something many of you may have heard of, though it is mainly a tradition in Scotland and Northern England. The first person to enter the house after the stroke of midnight is meant to set the tone for the coming year’s fortune. The luckiest people are considered to be dark-haired men, whilst the least lucky are thought to be females or fair-haired men. The first-footer should come with a gift – a coin signifies prosperity, whilst evergreen suggests long life and a drink is said to bring good cheer.

Even if you don’t take part in first footing, you may well hold the belief that you should open your back door to let out the old year, before opening the front door to let the New Year in. Still on the subject of doors (one close to our hearts) hanging lemons in doorways is meant to promote positive energy! And talking of doors, why not update yours in 2022?

If all these things are a bit far-fetched for your liking, you may be happy to uphold some of the more down-to-earth superstitions. For example, you should not sweep away dust on New Year’s Day as you can supposedly clear away your good luck, nor should you do the laundry.

However you celebrate New Year, have a great one! And remember if you’re looking to improve your home in 2022, you know where to come!

Silver Service

At Horsford Window and Conservatory Company, we’re proud to have been helping to improve the homes of Norfolk residents for 25 years!

We started out in September 1992, selling windows and doors from the house of Brian Hoffman (former Managing Director) who lived in the village of Horsford, hence the company name.

From there we were able to open our first showroom and storage unit, situated on Patterson Road, Norwich. The premises consisted of a small shop with a garage at the rear, where our business continued to grow. We decided to attend markets held in Sheringham and Cromer. This proved so successful, with custom growing in the area, that we decided to open our second showroom in Cromer, where we had established a great client base.

In September 2003, 11 years after starting out and with the business continuing to expand, we decided to move our Norwich office to a new, larger showroom and storage facility in Marriott Close on the City Trading Estate. It was also at this time, that current director, Gary Cooper, took over the reins.

Today we pride ourselves on our great service and quality of products, including windows, doors, conservatories, orangeries and the new warm roof. We’re FENSA registered and a Which Trusted Trader and have received a wealth of lovely comments over the years from satisfied customers.

This year is our silver anniversary but we like to think that we deliver gold standard service!

Transform your conservatory!

Do you limit the use of your conservatory because if can feel too hot in the summer of too chilly in the winter? Your conservatory could be given a new lease of life by replacing the existing roof with a Horsford Warm Roof.

The Horsford Warm Roof is an innovative roofing system designed for conservatories, which offers greater insulation, energy efficiency and style options than traditional roofing, whilst reducing necessary maintenance. By offering a more constant temperature, choice of designs and pleasing appearance, it could completely alter the way you use your conservatory. You could turn your conservatory into a new dining area or lounge, in the knowledge that it will maintain a more constant year-round temperature.

With the option of a tile or slate finish on the outside and a vaulted or lowered flat ceiling on the inside, it will also give your conservatory a whole new look! The Warm Roof insulation system gives a U-Value of 0.15 W/m2 and the tiles carry a 25-year guarantee.

We’re pleased to also offer a Warm Roof system for orangeries, enabling you to replace your existing roof (possibly a flat one in some older builds), with a lightweight, more thermally efficient pitched version, incorporating composite slates with the traditional roof lantern.

New For Spring

With the welcome appearance of spring, we tend to get our homes in order, start the spring-cleaning and assess what work we need to do on our properties.

The wet winter may well have taken its toll on your home. Have you noticed an increase in damp patches and condensation? Or maybe your conservatory roof has developed a leak? Now is the time to address these problems.

Excess condensation either between glazing panels or around the frames could be a sign that your windows are due for replacement. At Horsford we offer a stylish range of energy efficient windows, expertly fitted and backed by FENSA registration.

As for that leaky conservatory roof, we can repair or replace the roof, or indeed your whole conservatory. Perhaps you would like to replace your existing conservatory with one of our popular orangeries, which offer a substantial brick structure, but still provide windows large enough for you to enjoy the sunshine and your garden from the comfort of your home.

Whether your are looking to repair or replace your doors, windows, conservatory or orangery, then Horsford are always happy to give advice and a quote, then carry out any work to very high standard.

A Room For All Seasons

With summer behind us, autumn starting to bite and winter not far on the horizon, you may feel that you don’t get the opportunity to enjoy your garden as much as you’d like.

At Horsford, we have the solution to enjoying your garden all year round, whatever the weather – our stylish, bespoke orangeries allow you to appreciate the outdoors from indoors!

Orangeries differ from conservatories in that they incorporate a smaller roof lantern as opposed to a fully glazed roof and are more substantial structures with generally less glazing, whilst still having large enough windows to offer a great view of your garden. Less overall glazing means that an orangery doesn’t get quite as hot in summer or quite as cold in winter as a typical conservatory.

The addition of an orangery to your home creates a whole new room linking together your indoor space and your garden. Ideal for relaxing or entertaining in, using as a home office space or as an extra living room, a Horsford orangery is a valuable asset to any home.

We would like to thank the Blythes for their co-operation in the making of the movie, and for their appreciation in recognition of the work carried out by Horsford’s expert team.

Orangeries are an ideal choice if you would like to add a light, airy, yet warm living space with aesthetic appeal to your home. Whether you are looking for an area in which to entertain guests, somewhere to relax or the means to link your home and garden, an orangery provides the perfect answer.

Opt For An Orangery

Orangeries have become popular alternatives to conservatories in recent times, but how do the two really differ?

The main difference in the structure of an orangery is the roof, which incorporates a glazed lantern, as opposed to the entire area of the roof being glazed as with a conservatory.

Another major difference in the design is the sidewall, with orangeries offering a more substantial structure compared to the typical conservatory. An entablature (deep-moulded fascia) surrounds the perimeter of the doors and windows, and classic orangeries have traditional colonnades – columns flanking the windows and doors below the entablature, consisting of period bases and detailing.

Horsford’s bespoke orangery designs incorporate all the classic architectural elements, including roof lantern, glazing, colonnades and carefully planned proportions, to create a traditional, stylish structure to complement your existing building. However you plan to use your orangery, it will make a welcome addition to your home, adding both stylish living space and value to your property.

The construction of orangeries in this country dates back to the 17th century, when orangeries were built in the grounds of many fashionable residences, originally to house citrus trees during the winter months. However the earliest recorded orangery was built in Padua, Italy in 1545, with popularity for the structures rising with the advent of the production of clear glass in substantial quantities. These original orangeries tended to be huge buildings, not just used as plant houses, but designed to demonstrate the wealth and importance of their owners. Orangeries were even designed to contain fountains, grottos and areas to entertain guests.

Modern orangeries may be smaller structures, but they are designed to incorporate many original features and make stylish yet practical additions to the home. Providing light, airy, yet warm living spaces with aesthetic appeal, an orangery can add space, interest and value to your property, whether you are looking for an area to entertain, relax or bring your garden into your home.

At Horsford, we are pleased to offer bespoke orangeries, with a full, friendly yet professional service provided throughout the planning, construction and after-care stages.
