Let In The New Year!

We’re about to embark on another new year – here’s hoping you all have a great 2022! But how many of you will be including age-old traditions in your New Year celebrations?

It is said that you should wear new clothes on New Year’s Eve, not just to look glam for any parties you may attend, but to ensure you’ll look and feel good during the coming year. Noisy celebrations including fireworks are said to ward off evil, and let’s face it, are great fun too!

First footing is something many of you may have heard of, though it is mainly a tradition in Scotland and Northern England. The first person to enter the house after the stroke of midnight is meant to set the tone for the coming year’s fortune. The luckiest people are considered to be dark-haired men, whilst the least lucky are thought to be females or fair-haired men. The first-footer should come with a gift – a coin signifies prosperity, whilst evergreen suggests long life and a drink is said to bring good cheer.

Even if you don’t take part in first footing, you may well hold the belief that you should open your back door to let out the old year, before opening the front door to let the New Year in. Still on the subject of doors (one close to our hearts) hanging lemons in doorways is meant to promote positive energy! And talking of doors, why not update yours in 2022?

If all these things are a bit far-fetched for your liking, you may be happy to uphold some of the more down-to-earth superstitions. For example, you should not sweep away dust on New Year’s Day as you can supposedly clear away your good luck, nor should you do the laundry.

However you celebrate New Year, have a great one! And remember if you’re looking to improve your home in 2022, you know where to come!

Let the Light in

Glass was first used in windows around 100 AD by the Romans, whilst paper was widely used in ancient China, Korea and Japan. Prior to that animal hide or cloth was placed over window openings. In 14th century England, window panes were made from flattened animal horn, with glass not that common until the 17th century. Early glass was very thick and not really transparent, but gradually glass-making techniques improved, making it thinner and clearer.

Today’s window glass offers a clear view of the outside world and it's more thermally efficient too, helping to keep your home warmer. Our windows are rated 'A' for energy efficiency and are available in a large range of styles to suit your home!

“Extremely good communications throughout process. Quality of windows is excellent and priced competitively. The fitters worked hard and left no mess whatsoever. Thanks” Mrs Smith, July 2020

Your Garden Room

A great way to get enjoyment from your garden all year round, whatever the weather, is to add a conservatory or orangery to your home. Not only does this provide a great place to view your garden, but you can make it a haven for plants, bringing your garden indoors.

Orangeries were originally constructed to house fruit trees, and you could still consider growing your own citrus fruits indoors today. You may need to monitor indoor temperatures depending on what you choose to grow, but lemons and kumquats are considered the most resilient. Olive trees are also good to grow in conservatories as they are evergreens that you can prune to your desired size and shape and hopefully be rewarded with a tasty harvest!

When it comes to flowers in your conservatory, Peace Lilies are a great choice as they are known for cleaning the air, whilst being easy to look after. Indoor Azaleas are also a good idea, adding splashes of colour including pinks, reds and purples.

Other popular conservatory choices that fair well include cacti, ferns and succulents such as Aloe Vera.

Whatever you choose to grow in your conservatory or orangery, we're sure you'll be able to create a very personal garden room.
